Invitation to Minister Öztürk for the bill for Industrial Zones
2007-03-07

“It must become law as soon as possible”

Tunar: “We call Minister Öztürk to prepare and legalize the bill for the Industrial Zones, which will gain the industrial zones an autonomous structure, in cooperation with our cham-ber”

The Cyprus Turkish Chamber of Industry called Enver Öztürk, the Minister of Economy and Tourism, to legalize rapidly the bill for the Organized Industrial Zones, which will gain an autonomous structure to administrations of industrial zones.
Mr. Tunar, President of the Chamber of Industry at a press conference held on February 15, said that industrial zones in the TRNC should be established as modern industrial units meet-ing the EU standards, and respecting the environment.
Recounting that during the period of former governments the Cyprus Turkish Chamber of Industry opposed to distribution of plots at Alayköy industrial zone through the political party headquarters, and that they stopped the distribution and ensured cancellation of documents of allotments, Mr. Tunar, reminded that they had started series of studies with the related minis-try of that period in preparation of the Bill for the Organised Industrial Zones.
Stating that the industrial plots should not be distributed through headquarters of the political parties, “We regretfully see that with the establishment of the new government and assign-ment of Enver Öztürk to the office, the bill for the Organized Industrial Zones has been put on a shelve.” said Mr. Tunar.
Salih Tunar, pointing out that although it has been four months since the establishment of the new government, the Chamber of Industry could not find any person to address to bring the bill out of the shelve adding that they even didn’t find the chance to meet with Enver Öztürk, the Minister for Economy and Tourism, until now.
“We have regretfully learned from the press that the minister, without needing to negotiate with our chamber, has decided to open five new industrial zones.” Said Salih Tunar, adding that they were demanding to take over the industrial zones as the Chamber of Industry through legal arrangements, and demanded that the state should recede from the administering the industry, as it is through out the world, and to stop benefiting from the distribution of in-dustrial plots for political interests. Salih Tunar said that the Cyprus Turkish Chamber of In-dustry was ready to cooperate with the Ministry of Economy and Tourism for making the le-gal arrangements for returning industrial zones to the Chamber of Industry, and demanded that the following should not be done until procedures on the issue were completed: “New industrial zones should not be opened. No funds should be transferred from the inadequate sources to the new zones, which we were informed by the press that they were to be opened. Plots of the Alayköy Industrial Zone should not be distributed.”
During the press conference, it was stated that the continual mistake –including the present government- was the mentality of “I do it and it is done” which was wrong, and what should be done was to act in accordance with the NGO.
