Seminar on Banking was held with the organisation of Chamber of Industry and ICC

Minister Uzun: “Economists and academics should step forward and lead the way for the community and for the politicians”

Deputy President Sönmezler: “We should have the authority to give certificate of origin”

The seminar held on banking, organised by the Cyprus Turkish Chamber of Industry and the national Committee of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC Turkey) was held between 9 and 10 June at the Mercure Hotel, Kyrenia.

Minister for Finance, Ahmet Uzun said that economists and academics should step forward to direct the economy of the country and should lead the way for the community and politicians.

Minister of Finance Uzun pointed out that the country was undergoing a great economic development during recent years adding that all sectors wanted to get their share from this development however it was not possible to meet these demands in a flash.

During the two-day seminar, attended by members of the ICC Commission and personal of the related departments of the banks in the TRNC, innovations concerning the banking sector were dwelt on.
Members of the banking Commission of ICC Turkey Haluk Erdemol, Abdurrahman Özalp, Yahya Kütükçü, Kürşat Akpınar, Hasan Apaydın and Ece Başer, informed the participants on Revision Process, Methods and New Practices in Relation with Letter of Credits, during the seminar.

Minister for Finance Ahmet Uzun, Deputy President of the Cyprus Turkish Chamber of Industry Musa Türker Sönmezler and President of the Union of banks Bülent Berkay addressed the participants at the opening session of the seminar.

Addressing during the opening of the seminar, Minister for Finance Ahmet Uzun said that the country was undergoing a great economical development during recent years and that the gross national product per person increased to 11000 dollars from 5000 dollars. Mr. Uzun added that because the economic mechanism and rules were unsettled, this development brought some problems alongside.
Stating that entire sectors f the country wanted to get shares from this economic development, Mr. Uzun said that public workers demanded salary rise, commercial sector demanded convenience with taxation and production inputs, and that the banking sector has their distinctive demands and added that it was not possible to meet these demands in a flash.

“These problems are not seen in the industrialised countries. What is to be done are determined according to rules, but it is natural in economies as ours, which until now stand on their feet with the aids of Turkey, and which finally start moving and doing some things by their selves to suffer these pains.” said Mr Uzun, adding that he had faith in overcoming these problems through concurrence.

Pointing out that the fact that economists and academics should step forward to direct the economy of the country and should lead the way for the community and politicians has became a necessity, Minister Uzun said that he believes that the sector will benefit from the seminar.

Deputy President of Cyprus Turkish Chamber of Industry Musa Türker Sönmezler, during his speech at the opening reminded that, the Chamber of Industry was a member of the International Chamber of Commerce the ICC, which determines the rules of the international foreign trade, said that the seminar was organised for explaining about the revised new rules concerning letter of credits to the banking sector. Stating that the CTCI, like other member chambers of this institution, has the authority to arrange all kinds of documents used for trade, Mr. Sönmezler continued: “The Green Line Regulation which coordinates trade between South and North Cyprus gives the right for issuing certificate of origin to Cyprus Turkish Chamber of Commerce. During this period while the Direct Trade regulation is being discussed, we are expecting the EU Commission to correct its mistake and submit this authority to Cyprus Turkish Chamber of Industry.

As for the president of the Union of the Associations of Banks Bülent Berkay, reminding that during recent years training on letters of credits – which constituted the major part of the international trade related with banking- were acquired abroad,  added that it was pleasing to have such a seminar in North Cyprus.
Stating that learning the international rules was very important at a stage when whether or not enter the EU Mr. Berkay pointed out the necessity for the banking sector,  to learn the new rules immediately regarding the international trade, for the economy of our country was largely relied on imports.
